El año Nuevo en el Valle del Jordán se inauguró con un nuevo round de acoso a los palestinos que tratan de mantener alguna semblanza con la vida entre colonias israelíes y presencia del ejército, hechos cotidianos en el Valle. Cada colina es una colmena de tanques, personal militar, y soldados que maniobran y activan armas permanentemente hacienda gala de su poder. Estas demostraciones se repiten hasta el cansancio para instalar el miedo y desestabilizar la vida de los 64mil palestinos residentes que son objeto de todo tipo de abuso, agresión, y cualquier esfuerzo es válido por parte de Israel para removerlos de sus tierras.
El día 2 de enero, aproximadamente veinte familias de Ras al-Ahmar y al-Malih fueron obligadas por la fuerza a abandonar sus hogares y echados a dormir a doscientos metros de sus casas. La orden militar que se les presentó estipulaba que todos los rebaños, animales, y miembros de la comunidad debían abandonar sus hogares desde las 6pm hasta las 2pm del día siguiente, durmiendo a la intemperie, sin sus efectos personales, sin corral para el ganado ni techo para los hijos, mientras el ejército realizaba ejercicios militares sobre sus tierras incluido el uso de armamento pesado que disparaban dentro de la comunidad y contra cualquier objetivo. Nadie se salvó de la evacuación, ni los viejos, ni los enfermos, ni los inválidos, ni los niños. Todos debieron dormir fuera de sus casas, en pleno invierno. In Ras al-Ahmar, un niño de cinco años de la familia Qasim debió dejar la cama donde permanecía enfermo con fiebre alta y catarro, debieron movilizarlo a lo de un tío cerca de Deir Yassir, lejos de su entorno familiar, aunque estaba convaleciente, para refugiarlo de la intemperie. Es sólo un ejemplo que ilustra apenas cómo deben aguantar su lucha de resistencia pacífica. Una mujer con niños pequeños también debió salir a buscar refugio con sus niños en los brazos, mientras el ejército practicaba con su artillería todo alrededor. En Ras al-Hamra, un grupo de niños quedó acurrucado detrás de camiones y tractores ya que no tuvo oportunidad de salir a tiempo y debió dormir bajo la luz delas estrellas y de las colonias israelíes de Maskiyot, Raoi, y Beqaot. Mientras estos niños trataban de dormir acurrucados, vehículos militares pasaban constantemente por la carretera muy cerca de ellos. Esta yuxtaposición de los pastores indefensos y desarmados frente a la artillería del ejército responde a la surrealista expresión de Israel, de que se ejecutan por razones de seguridad. Ante el poder exultante de Israel se enfrenta la resistencia de los palestinos, resistencia que es su única arma, y su fortaleza, no quebrarse y continuar en el lugar a pesar de estas situaciones.
Esta orden de evacuación temporal, inmediata y en medio de la noche, es la cuarta desde diciembre, mes en que comienza el invierno y las lluvias, y se está convirtiendo en un ejercicio técnico de rutina destinado en realidad a debilitar y reducir la fuerza de los pobladores y de las comunidades, y echarlos acoso, tras acoso, de sus tierras. Sin embargo, al finalizar cada acción brutal militar de Israel, los palestinos del Valle del Jordán regresan a sus hogares y toman los pedazos de lo que haya quedado para reconstruir y continuar.
Cuando los militares dejan el área, quedan remanentes de artillería desperdigados por el terreno en medio de las comunidades, esto constituye un riesgo que puede ser fatal, ya que quedan bombas y minas sin detonar, que pueden ser activadas cuando los habitantes simplemente se movilizan en torno a sus quehaceres. Lo mismo ocurre con los animales. Ha habido casos de minas que han estallado luego de haberse efectuado un ejercicio militar en zonas agrícolas y comunitarias. Los cultivos y los árboles son aplastados e incendiados en mucho casos. Las cosechas, fundamentales para la sustentabilidad de la familia palestina, se pierden. El impacto emocional y psicológico que estas maniobras militares deja en la población, sobre todo en los niños, es muy grande, creando traumas muy difíciles de superar a lo largo de los años. Y además del daño psicológico, en muchos casos y la mayoría de las veces, los daños materiales son irrecuperables.
La Campaña de Solidaridad con el Valle del Jordán se acercó a estar con las familias para brindarles su apoyo, movilizándose de una a otra comunidad. Distribuyeron un autobús completo de frutas y verduras frescas entre las familias y se sentaron con ellos a compartir el fogón durante la noche en vela. Las familias del Valle del Jordán necesitan más que ninguna nuestro apoyo, ya que se encuentran aisladas del resto de Cisjordania y son totalmente ignoradas por todo el mundo.
The New Year in the Jordan Valley brings with it a new round of harassment for Palestinians trying to maintain some semblance of life amongst the Israeli settlements and army presence that is rife in the Valley. Every hilltop is a hive of activity as tanks, personnel, and soldiers endlessly maneuver their weaponry and soldiers in overt displays of power. This show is used tirelessly to instill fear and destabilize the 64,000 Palestinian residents that are subject to all forms of abuse, aggression and efforts to remove them from their land.
The second of January witnessed approximately twenty families from Ras al-Ahmar and al-Malih being forcibly removed from their homes and left to sleep two hundred metres away, insight of their homes. The military order issued to them, stated that all livestock, and members of the community must leave their homes from 6pm to 2pm the ensuing day, leaving them to face a night outside without shelter while the army exercised military drills that included heavy and light weaponry in and amongst their communities. No one was exempt from the evacuation, meaning the old, sick and small children all were turned out to the cold. In Ras al-Ahmar, a five year old child from the Qasim family, was forced to leave his bed where he has been confined with a high fever and a hacking cough, to seek refuge away from his family and the prospect of a night outside, with his uncle in nearby Deir Yassir. This example illustrates just one story of struggle that the communities faced, as women with small babies also had to find ways of keeping their children safe and warm while military artillery was being fired all around. In Ras al-Hamra, children were curled up in the back of trucks and tractors as they had no other choice but to sleep under the light of the stars and the piercing lights of the overshadowing settlements of Maskiyot, Raoi and Bakout. As they slept, military vehicles constantly drove past on the road next to them. The juxtaposition of a cluster of possession-less, displaced and unarmed shepherds next to the highly refined, well funded Israeli army brought to life the surreal question of these operations ever being a security issue. The truth of the matter lies only in using ones eyes to see who has all the power while the Palestinians only weapon lies in staying put and not being broken through repetitive brutality, into leaving.
This order, the fourth of such kind in December alone, is becoming a routine technique exercised by the Israeli military to weaken and reduce the strength of the individual inhabitants and the collective presence on the land. However, at the end of this round of military harassment, the Palestinians of the Jordan Valley will return to their homes and pick up the pieces of their lives and carry on.
After the military drills, remnants of the artillery used will be scattered throughout their communities, which can be fatal to anyone who comes into contact with it. Mines, for example, left over from military drills, have been known to blow up unexpectedly and seriously injure individuals. The cultivated fields and trees will also bear the brunt of being fired at, driven over and used as a live military firing zone. These crops are vital components of the Palestinians lives, without which they have no income and hence no way of subsiding. Hence, the aftermath of such exercises extol both a heavy emotional impact on the communities but also a very material one in the form of damaged crops and hence livelihood.
The Jordan Valley Solidarity Campaign did what they could in way of supporting the communities. Driving from misplaced community to misplaced community, they distributed a busload of fresh fruit and vegetables to the families. As well as sitting around smoldering fires with members of the communities and trying to be some form of concerned presence for them. Instead of just distributing goods and leaving, they tried to be a reassuring presence for a community that is much isolated from the rest of the West Bank and often much ignored by the world at large.
