El pasado 7 de enero, Mohammad Awad, de 14 años, fue liberado de una prisión israelí, luego de haber permanecido más de un mes y medio arrestado. Mohammad fue detenido el 20 de noviembre de 2011 durante una movilización pacífica de las que se realizan cada sábado en Beit Ommar.
El ejército israelí culpó erróneamente a Mohammad de haber arrojado piedras. Numerosos testigos del momento, incluyendo activistas internacionales y de Israel, declararon que estando presentes en el momento y lugar de los hechos, si bien Mohammad estaba allí participando de la marcha en contra del asentamiento ilegal de Karmei Tsur, no arrojó ninguna piedra. Cinco activistas solidarios, todos adultos, fueron arrestado ese mismo día, conjuntamente con Mohammad pero liberados la misma tarde del 20 de noviembre.
Luego de su detención, Mohammad fue llevado por las fuerzas israelíes al asentamiento ilegal de Karmei Tsur. Allí lo tuvieron durantre tres horas. Más tarde fue transferido al asentamiento Kiryat Arba en Hebrón, por ocho horas. Durante este tiempo las autoridades israelíes negaron información a los padres del niño acerca de su paradero. Mohammad fue reiteradamente interrogado tanto en Kiryat Arba como en la prisión de Ofer en el distrito de Ramallah donde fue finalmente trasladado.
Los oficiales le hicieron preguntas acerca de los miembros del Comité Nacional de Beit Ommar que ayudan a efectuar las moviliaciones semanales.
A pesar de que Mohammad es un menor y padece una dolencia médica crónica que afecta a su piel, el ejército de Israel le negó cualquier tipo de atención o tratamiento, manteniédolo durante más de un mes y medio en prisión.
Transgrediendo las legislaciones internacionales vigentes, las fuerzas de Israel arrestan a cientos de menores palestinos por su participación en la lucha pacífica en contra de la ocupación.

On January 7th, 2011, Mohammad Awad, age 14, was released after being held for more than a month and a half in an Israeli prison. Mohammad was arrested on November 20th, 2010, during one of the weekly Saturday unarmed demonstrations in Beit Ommar.
The Israeli military wrongfully charged Mohammad with throwing stones. However, numerous eye-witnesses, including international and Israeli solidarity activists, claim that Mohammad was not throwing stones but merely participating in an unarmed demonstration in his own village against the neighboring Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur. Five solidarity activists, all adults, were also arrested along with Mohammad but were released late in the evening of November 20th.
After his arrest, Mohammad was first brought to Karmei Tsur settlement by Israeli Forces and held there for three hours. He was then transferred to Kiryat Arba settlement in Hebron for an additional eight hours. During this time, Mohammad’s parents were not told his whereabouts by Israeli Authorities. Mohammad was repeatedly interrogated both at Kiryat Arba and at Ofer prison in the Ramallah district, where he was eventually brought. Interrogators asked him questions about members of the National Committee in Beit Ommar, who help to plan the weekly demonstrations.
Despite the fact that Mohammad is a minor and has a medical condition that chronically affects his skin, the Israeli military courts denied him bail and held him for over a month and a half. With blatant disregard for International Law, Israeli Forces have routinely arrested and imprisoned hundreds of Palestinian minors for their participation in the popular struggle against occupation.
