La versión oficial israelí de un incidente el pasado viernes, en el que un conductor palestino de Jerusalén oriental fue asesinado por agentes de fronteras israelí después de un accidente de vehículos, ha sido desafiada por un nuevo informe publicado hoy por el diario israelí Haaretz.
Según el nuevo informe, testigos dijeron que el automovilista golpeó accidentalmente a un grupo de oficiales de la frontera con Israel que se desplazaba a pie por el camino, y fue asesinado luego en venganza por los otros oficiales.
Los testigos informaron que el automovilista de 39 años, Jilani Ziad, yacía en el suelo cuando los agentes le dispararon en el rostro a corta distancia después de patear violentamente su cabeza.
El hecho ocurrió en el barrio de Wadi Joz, un área donde aumenta la tesnión ya que las israelíes declararon que esa zona será ocupada para extender los asetamientos los asentamientos judíos y es justamente una parte histórica de Palestina en un barrio de Jerusalén oriental.
Según testigos, un número de agentes fronterizos israelíes a caballo y a pie entraron en el barrio palestino en la tarde del viernes cuando los fieles iban saliendo de sus oraciones musulmanas. El encuentro generó una situación tensa en medio del tráfico pesado. Jilani estaba conduciendo por la carretera con mucho tráfico y concurrida de muchedumbre, cuando algunos jóvenes palestinos comenzaron a lanzar piedras a los policías.
Dos testigos dijeron que vieron que una de las piedras golpeó el parabrisas delantero del auto de Jilani, lo que le provocó efectuar una maniobra a la izquierda y golpear al oficial. Inmediatamente los demás oficiales comenzaron a disparar contra Jilani quien intentó alejarse y entró en un callejón cercano, donde los israelís continuaron su persecución, disparando armas de fuego de grueso calibre.
Un testigo que vive a lo largo del callejón dijo que vio el vehículo y a Jilani salir con los oficiales detrás y muy cerca de él. Una testigo expresó ante la prensa de Haaretz: "Hubo disparos y me puse a gritar. Mi madre corrió hacia mí y me tiró al suelo. Todo ocurrió en cuestión de segundos. Me di cuenta de que el hombre no estaba caminando con normalidad, estaba herido, vi el parabrisas roto de la coche. El hombre corrió como pudo hasta que cayó. Apenas bajó del coche los soldados que disparban se tiraron encima de él. No fue uno solo el que disparó sino todos ellos. Lo terminaron de matar cuando estaba en el suelo y nos gritaron en hebreo que nos fuéramos a nuestras casas.
La muchacha agregó que vio que además de los disparos lo pateaban muchas veces en la cabeza y que las armas que usaban eran fusiles.
Jilani estaba casado y tenía tres hijas. Su viuda es ciudadana de los EE.UU.

The official Israeli version of an incident last Friday, in which a Palestinian motorist from East Jerusalem was killed by Israeli border officers after a motor vehicle accident, has been challenged by a new report released today by the Israeli paper Haaretz.
According to the new report, witnesses say that the motorist accidentally hit a group of Israeli border officers walking on the road, and was then killed in revenge by the other officers.
The witnesses reported that the motorist, 39-year old Ziad Jilani, was lying prone on the ground when the officers shot him in the face at point-bank range after kicking him in the head.
The incident took place in the Wadi Joz neighborhood, an area of increased tension since Israeli authorities declared it to be part of a planned expansion of Jewish settlements in what has historically been a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
According to witnesses, a number of Israeli border officers on horseback and on foot entered the Palestinian neighborhood on Friday afternoon as Muslim prayers were getting out, creating a tense situation in the midst of heavy traffic. Jilani was driving along the heavily-trafficked road when some Palestinian youth began throwing stones at the officers.
Two witnesses said they saw one of the stones hit Jilani's front windshield, causing him to swerve to the left and hit the officers. The officers began firing at Jilani, who drove away and pulled into an alley nearby, where they continued to pursue him, firing their weapons.
A witness who lives along the alley said she saw the vehicle pull in, and saw Jilani get out with the officers close behind him. She told a reporter from Haaretz, "There was shooting and I started to scream. My mother ran toward me and threw me to the ground. Everything happened within seconds. I realized he wasn't walking normally, and saw the shattered windshield of the car, maybe from a stone. He ran until he fell over. He got out of the car, and they came after him. Not just one of them shot, but many of them, and then they started yelling in Hebrew for people to go back into their homes.” She said she saw the officers kicking Jilani in the head and then shooting him twice with rifles at close range, killing him.
Jilani was married with three daughters. His widow is a US citizen.
